Expand Your Horizons… Without Ever Leaving Your Couch
Why Having a Global Mindset—and Expanding Your Horizons—Matters, and How This Newsletter Will Help You Do It
*Scroll to the bottom for an intro of who I am. 😁 👋🏻*
What even is a “global mindset?” Why did I take the time creating this whole newsletter to talk about it? Why should you care about gaining a global mindset, and why should you even listen to me? What’s your part in any of this?
Whoa, slow down, that’s a lot of questions. Lets start by taking it from the top.
What is a “Global Mindset?”
The world is small. And it’s getting smaller every day.
It’s not literally shrinking, of course, but people are becoming more interconnected throughout the world in ways we never could have imagined before.
Think about some of these connections with me for a second. That phone you’re holding in your hands right now (or in your pocket, or wherever it is)? If it’s an iPhone, Apple “designs [it] in California, purchases components from suppliers in 43 countries across six continents, sends the parts to factories to be assembled, and then ships completed iPhones to warehouses and then to retailers around the world.” iPhone Supply Chain
A trip from New York to Paris? Before modern commercial airlines, that trip could have taken weeks to sail across the ocean on a ship. But now, we can make the trip in about 7 1/2 hours.
With social media, you can post a picture of your vacation in the Redwood National Park in California and have it pop up on someone’s X feed halfway around the world virtually instantaneously.
A global mindset is the ability to see these connections and understand the world from different perspectives.
It means being open to new ideas, embracing diverse cultures, and recognizing how interconnected we all are. With a global mindset, you’re curious about the world, eager to learn from others, and ready to think beyond borders.
In The Global Mindset, we are going to explore the world around us through a few different lenses. You’ll notice that the publication is divided up into a few different sections:
World News Weekly will be my chance to dive into 3 of the latest international trends and news shaping our world each week. This section could include big news stories, small community/event highlights, business and financial highlights, international law changes and cases, or anything in-between.
Global Flavors will bring you culinary adventures, giving you easy-to-follow recipes that will allow you to taste the cultures of the world.
Global Bookshelf will be where I recommend, review, and rave about different, globally significant books (that phrase will be defined broadly…). We might even set up a Global Mindset book club, so you can recommend books to me and we can read them together!
Globetrotter’s Guide will offer tips, recommendations, and stories for the curious traveler, wherever your destination may be.
Global Perspectives will showcase diverse voices and opinions from around the globe, including personal highlights, stories, and guest interviews.
Language Lens will take you on a linguistic journey around the world. Along the way, you’ll get language-learning tips, insights into linguistic issues, and individual language highlights for the language nerds—like me—out there.
Sound pretty good? Share The Global Mindset with someone who would be into this!

Why should you read what I write? Who even am I?
My name is Garrett Sebra, I am a passionate explorer of cultures, languages, and global connections, and I’m your host here at The Global Mindset.
I am a law/grad student who is currently pursuing a joint J.D./Master of Arts in Global Studies. I love international/multicultural exploration; I lived in France for 2 1/2 years, I have traveled to several other countries around the world, and I am an avid linguist. In addition to English, I speak French fluently, Spanish and Portuguese at an advanced level, some conversational Mandarin, and some basic Japanese. I plan on continuing to add to this list throughout my life!
With my background in international law and global studies, I’ve spent years studying how our world is intertwined. Through The Global Mindset, I aim to share my curiosity, insights, and (relative) expertise with others, offering fresh perspectives on international topics, culture, travel, and language.
Join me as we explore the world together, one story at a time.
Now, what’s your part in all this?
You are probably someone who likes learning. You might be someone who wishes you could learn a new language, or who wants, more than anything, to get out there and see places like Singapore, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, or Topeka—I don’t know where you want to go… 🤷🏼♂️ you do you! You might be curious about recipes for a good Spanish Paella, or cultural and religious traditions in Saudi Arabia.
Whatever it is, The Global Mindset is the place for you. I’m glad you’re here! I hope you stick around and that we can expand our horizons together, without ever even needing to leave the couch.
